I was lying on the church floor last night, reciting my memorized scriptures with a couple of friends. The verse that triggered an emotional response in me was John 1:5, which surprised me because it’s so short and simple, one I often hurry past. It is also one of the first verses I memorized because it’s tattooed on my ribs.
“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5
When I added these words, to a previous tattoo of a dark landscape on my side, I added a bright, yellow sun. The sun coming over the mountains symbolized the Lord’s light shining through my difficult circumstances at that time in my life. He brought me out of the dark into His light. He did it before, and He will do it again.
On a recent run, my friend said to me, “Did you know when you light a match, the flame doesn’t cast a shadow?” A shadow is created when light is blocked. A flame is not reflecting the surrounding light since it’s producing its own light. That’s deep.. just like Jesus is that light, that’s what we are called to be.n
Another memory verse of mine, is Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
We are to reflect the Lord. He is the light, we are the lamps that draw light from Him and display it to the world. We are flames of His fire, pictures of His glory, reflections of His nature. That’s why we were made.
Lord, speak to my spirit and light the fire within me! I want to be an accurate reflection of You and glow with Your presence!
